Weed Mitigation

Work to eradicate Non-Indigenous Aquatic Species (NIAS) has been ongoing for decades. Up until the 1960s, lakes and ponds in Massachusetts were mostly populated with indigenous or native aquatic plants but we’ve seen significant propagation of NIAS weed in the recent century.

This page captures the type of weed commonly seen in Spectacle Pond, past mitigation work done, information on funding these work as well as exciting solutions in the near future.

Maintaining a Balanced Ecosystem

A healthy pond exists when there is a balanced ecosystem and good stream flow. As to Spectacle Pond, that means that water has to flow in through a feeder steam, Bennett Brook, and out to Gilson Brook; that also means that water quality has to be monitored, along with that of fish and other species.

Quality Control for Drinking Water

PFAS, acronym for per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances, is a detected contaminant in the water supply of surrounding towns. PFAS are a group of man-made chemicals that came about mainly from the use of fire fighting foams near military facilities. They persist in the environment and in the human body – meaning they don’t break down and they can accumulate over time.

This page summaries finding of PFAS in Spectacle Pond, ways to detect and address it, as well as resources for further learning.
